What Is Precision CNC Turning?

CNC turning is a precision subtractive manufacturing process where a cutting tool traverses the exterior (and interior) of a rotating workpiece secured in a high-speed spindle. Unlike milling, where the tool rotates and the part remains stationary, turning leverages the rotational force of the part itself to achieve exceptional concentricity and symmetry. Modern CNC lathes are equipped with live tooling, allowing milling, drilling, and tapping operations to be performed in a single setup, eliminating secondary handling and reducing lead times.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the maximum turning diameter and length your CNC lathes can accommodate?

A1: Our turning fleet handles part diameters up to 500 mm on our vertical turning lathes (VTLs) and lengths up to 1,000 mm on our multi-axis turning centers with live tailstock support. For Swiss-style machines, the maximum bar stock diameter is 32 mm, ideal for micro-precision components.

Q2: What surface finish (Ra) can I expect from your precision CNC turning process?

A2: Our standard CNC turning achieves a surface finish of Ra 1.6 μm. With precision turning using wiper inserts, we routinely achieve Ra 0.4 μm. For mirror-finish requirements, we offer super-finishing down to Ra 0.1 μm.

Q3: Can you machine complex parts that require both turning and milling in a single setup?

A3: Yes. Our multi-axis turning centers are equipped with live tooling and Y-axis capability, enabling milling, drilling, tapping, and cross-drilling operations without removing the part from the spindle.

Q4: What thread types and standards can you produce on your CNC lathes?

A4: We produce all common thread standards: Unified (UNC/UNF), Metric (ISO), British Standard (BSP/BSPT), NPT/NPTF, Acme, Buttress, and custom proprietary thread profiles.

Q5: Do you provide material certifications and full inspection reports with each order?

A5: Yes. Every shipment includes an itemized Final QC Report with dimensional measurements. Upon request, we provide original Mill Test Reports (MTR), RoHS/REACH compliance declarations, and full CMM inspection data sheets.

Q6: What is your typical lead time for a production-ready custom turned part?

A6: Rapid prototyping ships in 3-5 business days. Small-batch production (10-500 pieces) ships in 7-10 business days. High-volume runs (500-10,000+ pieces) are delivered within 15-25 business days.
